Exploring Rural Shrink Smart Through Guided Discovery Dashboards

Many small and rural places are shrinking. Interactive dashboards are the most common use cases for data visualization and context for exploratory data tools. In our paper, we will explore the specific scope of how dashboards are used in small and rural areas to empower novice analysts to make data-driven decisions. Our framework will suggest a number of research directions to better support small and rural places from shrinking using an interactive dashboard design, implementation, and use for the everyday analyst. Going Analog: Emerging from the Weeds and Broadening our Audience

We could all use a break from our manuscripts (and our screens). Can thinking about our work in a new way help us re-energize? In this talk I’ll share some non-traditional data products that inspire me, some work I’ve been involved with inspired by these new mediums (including work with students), and some reflections about how expanding our sense of what “counts” as a research product can help us reach a broader audience.
